The REI classification is a European standard (notably defined by the EN 13501-2 standard and regulated in France by the decree of March 22, 2004) which evaluates the fire resistance of building elements, including containers.
The acronym REI 120 is broken down into three fundamental criteria, followed by a duration in minutes:
R – Resistance (load-bearing capacity): Ensures the mechanical stability of the container structure under the effect of fire. It ensures that the structure does not collapse.
E – Sealing (flame resistance): Evaluates the ability of walls, doors and elements to prevent the spread of flames and hot gases from one side of the structure to the other.
I – Insulation (thermal): Measures the resistance of elements to not transmitting heat from the side exposed to fire to the unexposed side, thus protecting the contents and the external environment.
60 or 120: Represents the duration in minutes (i.e., 1 or 2 hours ) during which the three criteria (R, E and I) are simultaneously met.
In plain terms, an REI 120 container is designed to maintain its integrity, contain fire and heat, and ensure the stability of its structure for at least 60 or 120 minutes in the event of a fire.

REI 120 or REI 60 containers are constructed with high-performance materials and specific fittings:
Structure: Often made of welded steel sheet, reinforced for fire resistance (R).
Insulation: Use of fire-resistant insulating panels (often rock wool classified M0) to guarantee thermal insulation (I) and airtightness (E).
Containment: They are often equipped with a watertight containment tray under grating to prevent any accidental spillage of hazardous liquids, thus protecting the soil and water.
Doors: Equipped with REI 120 / REI 60 fire-resistant doors , featuring thermally expandable seals that self-seal in the event of a fire to ensure airtightness. Automatic closing systems can be integrated.
Ventilation: Integration of fire dampers that close automatically under the effect of heat to maintain containment in case of fire.
